WRI approaches coal bed methane (CBM) produced water management from a multifaceted perspective, with the goal of helping stakeholders make decisions about treatment, land application, and management strategies for individual situations.
WRI is developing innovative pretreatment processes for removing organic constituents. Techniques such as chemical oxidation and adsorption can significantly enhance the efficiency and economy of existing CBM water treatments such as ion exchange and reverse osmosis.
To identify the most cost-effective and environmentally appropriate ways to handle CBM produced water, we have conducted laboratory- and field-scale trials of water treatment strategies, such as mineral amendment. We have conducted soil core studies in the lab as well as field evaluations, examining ion transport and accumulation through different soil horizons.
Simulation studies performed under controlled conditions can speed natural weathering processes and provide long-term data in months instead of years. Such information is critical for building a scientifically sound database for compliance with current and future regulatory policies.
Technical and Financial Partnerships
In addition to delivering high-quality technical service, WRI may be able to match non-federal funding for projects related to CBM water disposal, treatment or management. Industry partners can use portions of operating penalties imposed by the Wyoming DEQ (+50% cash) as set forth in the WYDEQ’s Supplemental Environmental Projects program to match WRI’s contribution for CBM water treatment and management projects. This effectively leverages industry out-of-pocket contributions by up to 6 fold (e.g., industry would contribute $100K on a $600K project).
